Cervical Cancer Treatment

Early stages of cervical cancer (carcinoma in situ) are treated by: cryosurgery, laser surgery, tumor excision by electrical loops and wedge-shaped removal of the cervix. In the case of recidivism, a tumor or unwillingness to have future children may be offered a simple hysterectomy (removal of the uterus).
The patients with the second stage of cervical cancer, an extended hysterectomy (removal of the uterus together with lymphatic nodes) is used, as well as radiation therapy and sometimes chemotherapy.
Women with cervical cancer stages III-IV are treated using internal and external radiation, and chemotherapy. However, the survival of this category of patients ranges from 20 to 50%.
In the case of recurrence of cervical cancer the treatment depends on the type of the relapse. If it expanded, operations are effective in 40-50% of cases. For women with distant metastases (liver or bones) chemotherapy may lead to temporary improvement in 15-25% of cases.
